Froyo: what’s the scoop?

Frozen yogurt seems to be taking over the dessert world by storm. In fact, if a person has yet to try the refreshing treat, he or she is sure to be living under a rock. Shops with the concept of a self-serve froyo experience are popping up left and right around the Tacoma area. Names like Blackbear, Menchie’s, Gibson’s, or Lime Berry are sure to ring a bell in the mind of every Bellarmine student. These shops are becoming the premiere places for post-football game hangouts, study sessions, and babysitting adventures. Their magical power to draw people of all ages in for a quick, frozen delight is baffling. There must be an inside scoop as to why froyo places are becoming such a hot spot in our society.

Frozen yogurt is, in many ways, healthier than traditional ice cream. “It has fewer calories and is lower in saturated fat,” says Alissa Maxwell, manager of Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt in Tacoma. For these reasons, froyo is well accepted by the diet-conscious population in America. People may be hooked on the modern health craze, but they have not lost their sweet tooth. Froyo is like a gift sent from heaven that allows customers to get their sugar fix while still watching their calories.

Another factor that adds to the popularity of this chilled dessert is the experience of creating it. Froyo shops effortlessly catch people’s attention with their bright colors and playful décor. Once inside, the curios onlooker is not disappointed. Most shops display a wide array of unique yogurt flavors. The customer grabs a stack of sample cups and begins a journey of taste bud bliss. When ready, he decides which flavors he likes best and fills his cup to the top with yogurt. The next step is crucial to this sacred building process. We will call it the “Topping Turnpike.” Froyo shops literally offer any and all toppings under the rainbow from nuts and sprinkles to cookie dough bites and peanut butter sauce. Customers have the creative license to top their froyo with as many of these tasty accessories as they like. The manager of Yeti Yogurt in Tacoma claims, “The possibilities for a unique, frozen creation are endless!”

Froyo is healthy, tasty, and fun to experiment with. These three characteristics are what make it truly one of a kind in the dessert world. Forget the old saying about ice cream; it’s time to start chanting, “You blurt, I blurt, we all blurt for frozen yogurt!
