Falling for the last time

The new breakthrough iOS game, Flappy Bird, has people jumping out of their shoes. Literally. The extremely basic game with only one button can be either the most entertaining or most frustrating thing in life. People spend hours trying to reach a new high score, only to get the same feeling all over again when it finally happens. Dong Nguyen, creator of Flappy Bird, said, “Flappy Bird was designed to play in a few minutes when you are relaxed.” Obviously, the game has become something unpredicted. With all of the controversy surrounding the app, Nguyen has decided to take the app down from the App Store. Many have criticized his actions, but as people around Bellarmine suggest, Flappy Bird is a problem that needs to be fixed.

Senior Tommy Martin and sophomore Hailey Purtzer both agree that Flappy Bird was a problem for students everywhere. Instead of doing homework, students would play the game for hours on end, failing to turn in assignments or studying for tests. Martin said, “I’m fine with it being gone from the App Store. It’s on my phone already so I can play it if I want. My advice: Delete Flappy Bird, save lives.”

Similarly, Purtzer said, “I don’t understand why people get so overworked about this. I have no feelings for it, it’s just there.” Both students have high scores around 20, nothing measurably outstanding.

English teacher Bill Baerg, whose daughter, Lauren, is a Flappy Bird player, said, “It is a waste of time.”

Whether one agrees with Nguyen’s decision or not, Flappy Bird is no longer available. On eBay, people are selling their iPhones with Flappy Bird anywhere from $500-$5000. Addicting or not, many out there want to keep their wings flapping and avoid those green Mario-like tubes. Flappy Bird has revolutionized the world of games forever. Maybe basic, more challenging games will be in the future. For some, this could be very dangerous and potentially threatening to schoolwork in the future.
