A Historical Year for the Academy

The Academy Awards: a night dedicated to dresses that could cover the cost of a home, celebrities fake smiling when their opponents win a nomination, and—until the lack of a host this last year—doses of comedic relief to cut the tension.

On a more serious note, the Oscars are supposed to be a celebration of the incredible achievements made in film with categories such as best director, best editing, best acting roles, and so on. This year, although filled with some exciting nominations, it was thought that several worthy films would be snubbed.

However, The Academy did quite the opposite, at least for the comedy thriller, “Parasite.” This incredible film, directed by Bong Joon Ho, became the first film in the history of The Academy Awards that is not in English to take the title of best picture. Not only did Bong Joon Ho and his team grab the Best Picture Oscar, they also clutched the awards for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Foreign Film. The success of this film will go down in history as a huge step forward for The Academy and a huge encouragement for all international filmmakers.

While the award show is filled with talented actors across the board only four were recognized for their work. Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in “Joker” was something to be marveled and he certainly deserved the honor of Best Actor. Brad Pitt then received the award of Best Supporting Actor for his role of Cliff Booth in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Best Actress was given to Renée Zellweger for her role as Judy Garland in “Judy” and Laura Dern’s performance in “Marriage Story” was recognized by the award of Best Supporting Actress.

All of these were certainly well deserved but a surprising hole in the nominations include Awkwafina’s performance in “The Farewell.” This movie was also ignored in all other categories, even best foreign film.
