Have you ever wanted to attend a concert or performance but struggled spending over $100? The organization TeenTix works every single day to combat this barrier.
In 2004, TeenTix was established. They began by partnering with 10 Seattle Center organizations to provide affordable tickets to teenagers, and it took off from there. Now TeenTix has over 150 arts partners and is only growing! With these partnerships, $5 tickets are readily available at so many locations across the Puget Sound. Climate Pledge Arena and The 5th Avenue Theatre are two of many great examples.
The TeenTix website states that they “exist to break down barriers that prevent teens from accessing the arts, career development, and arts learning opportunities.”
Not only does TeenTix make it easier to attend arts events, but they also offer a number of teen programs centered around career development and learning. These programs consist of the TeenTix New Guard, Newsroom, Mentorship for Teen Artists of Color, Arts Podcast, and Workforce Development. They all strive to allow for the opportunity to be well-versed in aspects of the professional world in collaboration with other teen artists. Members additionally serve as ambassadors for the organization. Applications open before the coming school year begins, and any student is welcome to apply. Check out their website for more information.
TeenTix has had a massive impact on many individuals in the past 20 years. Because of the multitude of opportunities possible, young people can explore things that would not have been feasible otherwise. In fact, there are a number of Bellarmine students who have used their TeenTix passes to take part in incredible events.
Junior Lian Katterhagen said, “TeenTix has opened my horizons to different musicals, helped me to see more productions, and allowed me to go to different art spaces.”
Katterhagen was a member of the New Guard last year, and they spoke about how TeenTix has changed the way they see art. Museums were not a place that Katterhagen frequented, but following the New Guard’s trip to the Henry Art Gallery, their perception and thoughts on art shifted.
“TeenTix has helped me to see a lot of shows that I probably wouldn’t have been able to due to the price. I have gotten to see a lot of 5th Avenue Theatre productions such as Sweeney Todd, and it’s honestly something I rely on to see shows,” said senior Mallory Whalin.
Seeing shows at The 5th Avenue Theatre is not a cheap venture. Whalin talked about how TeenTix is a tool that every teenager should utilize. Whether you enjoy watching theater, or seeing your favorite artist in concert, countless chances are being presented 24/7.
