Did you realize that April 12 was National Grilled Cheese Day? Well, in case you missed it, don’t fret as it’s never too late to celebrate one of the most nostalgic American staples. Grilled cheese is a warm, cheesy, and scrumptious snack that is perfect for anytime of the year. And the great news is that you can make one at home with only just a few ingredients and a pan or skillet.
Here’s step by step instructions on how to make a grilled cheese:
Ingredients
- Two pieces of bread
- Preferred choice of cheese (typically American or cheddar)
- Butter and or mayonnaise
- Additional ingredients: tomato, ham, bacon, etc.
Instructions:
- Butter the Bread
Spread butter (and or mayo) on one side of each bread slice. This will get golden and crispy in the pan to a good crunch. - Construct the Sandwich
Place one slice of bread in the pan, buttered side down. Add your cheese and set the second slice of bread on top, butter side up. This is also the time to add any other additional ingredients. - Cook It
Turn the stove on to medium heat. Cook the sandwich for 2–3 minutes, then gently flip it and cook the other side until the cheese is melted and the bread is golden brown. - Plate and Enjoy
Let it cool for a minute (the cheese will be hot), slice it and enjoy!
Tips:
-
Don’t turn the heat up too high or the bread might get burnt. Patience is key when making the ultimate grilled cheese.
-
Want to spice up the flavor? Try adding a little garlic powder or herbs to the butter.
-
Adding additional ingredients like bacon or tomato will make the sandwich more filling.
Why It’s Great:
Grilled cheese is quick, cheap, and yummy. It’s perfect for lunch, a snack, or even dinner after a long day. National Grilled Cheese Day might be over—but honestly, every day is a good day for grilled cheese.
