Bellarmine’s teachers not only teach, but create. New art teacher Heather Cornelius is one of those educators who also pursues her professional passions as well.
Cornelius shared her personal statement. “I am a ceramic artist living in the Pacific Northwest. Ceramics provides me with a lifetime of opportunities to express my creative ideas. I consider myself to be a sculptor as well as a potter. You’ll find that sculptural elements tend to carry over into my pottery, bringing unique detail to my designs. I feel that the best work is created with deep intention. My aim is to convey my expressions of my dream world, nostalgia, and self reflection in my work. Handmade objects bring warmth and meaning to our daily lives, from the artists’ hands to the hands of others.”
Her professional biography is equally as impressive.
“Heather Cornelius received her Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in 3-Dimensional studies from Pacific Lutheran University in 2007. Since then she has developed her ceramics studio practice and has exhibited nationally. Much of her work is inspired by personal relationships manifested through dreams or experiences. In 2023, Cornelius was selected for the headline exhibition ‘I Contain Multitudes’ in the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) Conference in Cincinnati OH. Locally, Cornelius’s work was selected ‘Best in Show for Body of Work’ at the Bainbridge Island Art and Craft Gallery by guest juror Richard Notkin. Most recently Cornelius was selected out of 300 artists applications in the annual Juried exhibition hosted by Peninsula Art League in Gig Harbor. She received ‘Best in Show for 3-Dimensional Art’ in the Harbor History Museum which is on display now through November 22.”
Cornelius said, “I am honored to announce that I was awarded First Place For 3-Dimensional category.”
