It’s that time again, Adopt-a-Family is back for its 33rd year. Every year, Bellarmine students help to spread holiday cheer and provide support to families in need within the Tacoma area. Teachers, students, and families work together to make the holidays a little brighter for local families in need. The program encourages students to participate in active service and support others, while being given a chance to reflect on the importance of giving back.
Each year, Ignatian Formation classrooms are assigned a new family to support. Students typically choose which family members they want to focus on and each bring in gifts or items to give to them. This can include clothing, toys, and essential items. Bellarmine is providing $300 Fred Meyer gift cards this year so food is an option gift. All items and gifts are to be brought to school by Dec. 13, and will be delivered by students and teachers on Dec. 17.
In the Bellarmine E-News letter, it states over 45 families have been helped over the years and it is the students job to keep this tradition alive. This program is not only an annual event but it’s a key part of the legacy and impact Bellarmine wants to leave on their wider community. Through their environment, students have the ability to demonstrate the Jesuit values of service, Magis, and justice that are so important to Bellarmine.
Adopt-A-Family is more than just a holiday tradition, but a time for service and raising awareness. It shows us that community is not just about sharing good times, but also coming together to support each other through difficult moments. This coming together helps cultivate a sense of empathy and connection among everyone involved. Adopt-A-Family is a reminder that true community is built on the foundation of helping each other, especially in times of need.
