Additionally, Carrie Underwood made her debut by winning “American Idol,” which propelled her into stardom. In cinema, “Mr. And Mrs. Smith,” starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, becoming a cultural phenomenon. Pope John Paul II passed in April, a somber event for Catholics around the world. Hurricane Katrina struck in August, leading to devastation in New Orleans. On social media, MySpace and Facebook expanded their user base to high schoolers. For many, 2005 was a year filled with both creativity and tragedy.
