As the golden leaves start falling and the crisp breeze fills the air, it’s a signal that autumn has arrived, awakening a traditional holiday – Thanksgiving, a celebration of gratitude, a thread that connects hearts and families together.
At its core, Thanksgiving is a reminder to pause and appreciate the blessings in our lives, both great and small. From the bonding relationships and simple joys made with our loved ones to successful accomplishments, this holiday encourages us to express gratitude for all that we have. For many, it’s an opportunity to have a reflection on the gifts they have and cherish those who have enriched their lives.
Junior Erika Cayabyab shared her point of view on this traditional holiday, stating, “Thanksgiving, personally for me, means season of gratitude and being able to express gratitude with the blessings we have in life that God has given us. I would say having gone through one of the toughest times in my life this year, I’m very grateful for the people that I have, whether it’s close friends or family, that has really become the reason why I was able to go through the problems I was facing.”
Gratitude is more than just a fleeting emotion. It’s a mindset, a way of life. It’s the warm feeling that washes over you when a friend listens without judgment, or when a stranger offers a helping hand. It’s the quiet appreciation for the simple joys, like a beautiful day with nice weather or the laughter you share with your loved ones.
Junior Samantha Averna said, “I’m always thankful for my family but this year I appreciated the unwavering support from my friends. I express my gratitude by spending time with my parents on Thanksgiving day and letting them know how thankful I am of them, and I give my friends little treats and celebrate Friendsgiving.”
Similarly, Junior Jill Perez shared her way of expressing love and gratitude towards her loved ones, stating, “I express gratitude through my words. I always say ‘I love you’ to everyone and I love giving my family hugs and greeting them whenever I see them.”
For some, Thanksgiving is also a time for connection and reunion. It’s a chance to reunite with long-distance family members, sharing stories and laughter around the dinner table.
“My family will usually go to my aunt and uncle’s house and then we all come together with my cousins from my dad side, we eat food and we talk,” said Perez, “I look forward to seeing my family and my cousins because I don’t see them often and it’s always fun to make jokes with them and play card games.”
Thanksgiving is more than just a holiday. It’s a reminder to slow down, appreciate the present moment, and express gratitude for all the blessings that we have. Take a moment to say thank you to those who have made a positive impact on your life. Call a loved one, send a heartfelt message, spend quality time with your family and friends, or simply do some random acts of kindness. Let us commit to practicing gratitude daily, no matter how small or large our blessings may seem.
