On Wednesday, Sept. 18, senior volleyball player Courtney Schwan received the USA Today Inspiration award at her high school’s fall sports assembly. Schwan is a triple athlete, lettering in fastpitch, basketball and, of course, volleyball.
The National Guard sponsors the recognition, and they asked a special person to present it. Colonel Greg Allen flew back from Thailand to Tacoma, his hometown, and to Bellarmine, his alma mater.
Just 30 years ago, Allen was the captain of the football team that made it the farthest in playoffs in school history… that is, until last year when the Lions took 2nd in State.
The day was special for both Schwan and Allen, two athletes of two different generations who continue to lead and inspire their teammates, whether on the court, field or in battle.
