The Bellarmine football team morphed from good to great as the season progressed. This transformation actually began deep in the season with the match-up against the Olympia Bears. Although the Bears outplayed the Lions on their field (24 -10) this first loss set off something powerful. That night after the game, the seniors sat stunned in the middle of memorial field, talking until the early morning hours. They strengthened their resolve. The following week saw a team with greater passion, unity and attention to detail. That Friday night they stunned their rival, the Gig Harbor Tides. The Lion defense ripped the ball from the Tides on the first play and set off a whirlwind performance that had the Lions at 52-0 at the half along with a playoff berth.
The Lions dominated their first playoff team,Kamiak, by a score of 63 to 21.
A few mistakes in the second playoff game against the Newport Knights found Bellarmine down 21 points early on. However, by halftime they closed the gap to 14 points. The last few minutes was a thriller as the Lions scored two touchdowns and regained the ball for one last possession. The Lions made it to the 10 yard line with a few seconds left for a game-winning field goal.
Next they faced the Bothell Cougars. After a hard fought regulation game Bellarmine tied and were sent to overtime. The Lions had the ball first from the Cougar 25 and finished with a 37 yard field goal. The Cougars got their opportunity, but after 2 passes, they threw an interception on their third down. The Lions advanced to the semifinals.
The Lions faced the undefeated Camas Papermakers in the Tacoma Dome. After a relentless battle, Bellarmine came up short on the field (49-21) but only after having had a terrific and memorable season. Lion Pride!
