Girls and Boys basketball teams hit courts
Both of Bellarmine’s basketball teams are excited for this winter season in the South Puget Sound League (SPSL).
The girls are really looking forward to the upcoming season. The team will have nine returning varsity players, with four of them being seniors. Senior Maggie Smith summarized this sentiment: “There are experienced YYGs.” Smith expects the season to be really fun because they have been “putting work in the weight room.”
With two appearances at the Dome in the past three seasons, the girls are very optimistic about this season. They are excited to welcome the new coach, Kimberly West. Madeline Garcia, senior, believes that, “It will be a really good transition. Kimmy has been with the program for a long time.”
West is looking to “continue to establish the team as one of the top contenders in the state of Washington.”
Senior Jenny Hagle is incredibly excited for this season: “It’s time to get yuckets.”
Like the girls, the boys have been preparing for this winter. They started to build the team in the summer in the weight room and through conditioning and skill development. In the words of Charles Elzie, junior, “We’ve been working out, hella.”
Coach Bernie Salazar is eager to “work with a great group of guys, great staff, compete, and have fun.” They will have to build a new team this year due to the loss of seven varsity players from last year.
However the boys are not deterred. Jaylen Scott, sophomore, said, “Our hope for this season is to win league. Go to districts. Win districts. Then, we hope to go to state and win for the Bellarmine community.”
Or as senior Austin Ostrander succinctly put it: “Progressing- we hope to progress.”
Seniors Garrett Horner and Chris Mackey stated the same goal: “Win league.”
The team is confident. Scott said, “We’re going to be good. We’re going to be good, but we’re small.”
