Winter Sports Update: Basketball
This year has been full of surprises and disappointments. The 2020 school year has already been online for over two months and, with the return to the ABAB schedule, it doesn’t look like we will be heading to campus anytime soon. The continuation of online school puts certain hopefuls in jeopardy, one of which is the winter sport: basketball.
The idea was that the season could begin in late December and run into February. There would only be league games, meaning there would be no playoffs. Obviously there would not be many complaints because all people really want is to watch some games and stop missing out on high school sports. Now that we may not even return to campus until at least 2021, things are not looking very good for the basketball season.
“The WIAA will let us know about the season on Dec. 4.” This is what men’s basketball varsity coach Bernie Salazar has said about the season. Coaches will be informed about whether or not the season may take place in the winter or if it is being postponed to the spring. Several potential varsity players have said, “I really want a season,” and seniors have been quoted saying, “I gotta have senior year sports.” This season is something everyone wants, and we find out more in less than a week.
Although some signs point in the opposite direction of a basketball season, there is no reason to give up hope. Maybe players will have to receive continuous testing but if all goes well then games can be held, just without fans. They could be live-streamed so students don’t miss out on one of the most fun high school sports to watch. We will receive more information regarding this subject as we move closer to the potential season, but everyone should be prepared for the worst. That is one of the most 2020 phrases that there can be.
