As Bellarmine’s winter sports season came to a close, the wrestling program prospered with resilience, dedication, and record-breaking success. What began as months of late night practices and intense conditioning ended with numerous athletes qualifying for the Mat Classic 37 State Tournament at the Tacoma Dome. For many wrestlers, stepping onto the mat at state represented not just a competition, but the reward for an entire season of discipline and perseverance.
For the first time in program history, 12 wrestlers qualified for state (eight boys and four girls), accomplishing a new school record and marking a milestone moment for Bellarmine wrestling. Senior team captain Bryce Hallett reflected on the team’s growth throughout the season, saying, “We’re definitely getting better… definitely more people showing up and then more people staying after practice and working hard.” Increased participation, stronger commitment, and a culture of accountability helped push the team to new heights. Throughout the season athletes remained deeply connected to the sport and to one another, which ultimately contributed to their historic achievement.
After many years of wrestlers competing at the Dome, this year’s group set a new standard for the program. A key factor in their success was a shift in mindset. Rather than focusing solely on winning or the score of a match, coaches emphasized effort and attitude. Hallett explained, “Our coach always talks about just being focused not on the score, but on how we are competing.” This mentality allowed athletes to stay composed under pressure and perform at their highest level.
Though wrestling is often viewed as an individual sport, the Bellarmine team proved that unity matters. Teammates consistently supported and uplifted one another, creating an environment built on encouragement and shared goals. As spring sports begin, the wrestling program closes its season proud of its accomplishments and motivated to continue building a legacy of excellence.
