Although for many, spring means pretty flowers, and sunnier days, for the girls tennis team it has been a season of uncertainty, and artificial lighting. Despite the team placing second in state last year, they have not gotten to see much court action, with only four practices being played outdoors this season. Being rained out has become the expectation for the team this year. Most days they head inside to practice in the gym, and unfortunately they typically aren’t the only team vying for a spot indoors. Other sports such as softball and lacrosse, also lose the ability to practice in their typical spots on rainy days, which means the space is constantly sought after. The girls have worked through this though, and have continued to improve and grow together as a team.
The addition of social studies teacher Caroline Meines as the head coach this year, has come with a wide range of positives for the team. Strength training has had a larger emphasis this year, along with focused indoor practices. Along with Meines, assistant coach, Megan Dempsey, has created an amazing team environment and kept spirits high when practice gets rained out.
On the positive side, the girls have maintained a 3-0 record win against Central Kitsap, North Thurston, and Lincoln. And hopefully gain another win against their League rivals, Gig Harbor, after a cancellation due to weather.
Reflecting on the team’s unfortunate loss on the league title last season, senior Anya Morevak said, “Last year ended a little rough as a team because we played against Silas and lost 2-3…. Silas is coming home to us, so I’m hoping for a lot of support for that game but that’s a very important match for us because I’d say it’s our revenge match for us… so hopefully we win that match to win leagues as a team.”
With spring break approaching, the weather is looking to make a turn for the better, which will allow the team to continue to keep their undefeated winning streak and stay on track to achieving another league title for 2026.
