Recently, the Masters, the most famous golf tournament in the world, was played from April 6 through 12. With almost 20 million peak views and 14 million average views throughout the course of the tournament. Many got to witness the record-breaking performance of Rory McIlroy to secure his second green jacket win at the Masters.
The Masters was founded in 1934 by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts. The original name of the Masters was Augusta National Golf Club, but was renamed in 1939 by Clifford Roberts to symbolize the “masters of golf” that play in the tournament. It has maintained a very honorable reputation for almost 100 years, as its an annual, invitation only major championship.
The tournament itself consists of 72 holes, played over 4 days (Thursday to Sunday). A 36 hole cut is applied, which means players must be within the top 50 spots to continue playing. Additionally, if a playoff is required, it starts on the 18th hole, then goes to the 10th if needed. The two players alternate until there is a winner.
McIlroy’s upbringing was prominently filled with hard work and grit. His mother, Rosaleen McDonald, worked the night shift at the 3M factory, and his father, Gerry McIlroy, worked 12 hour shifts as a bartender at the Hollywood Golf Club. Rory spent most of his life at the golf course, at just 10 months old he was crawling on the green of the golf course while his dad was at work which started Rory’s fascination with golf.
When Rory was seven years old, the Hollywood Golf Club changed their policy and allowed Rory to become their youngest member. In an interview, Rory stated he wanted to become the best golfer in the world and win all the majors. Which he is still on track to achieve. Rory’s remarkable success has been admired by many. He is a resemblance of coming from almost nothing to being a millionaire.
Ultimately, McIlroy’s performance at the Masters had demonstrated his love and passion for the sport that has led him to success. His journey is a symbol of how hard work can lead to achieving your goals and dreams. McIlroy’s second win of the Masters will continue to be an inspiration to many future golfers and fans around the world for years to come.
