On May 15-16, Bellarmine Prep’s fast pitch season came to a difficult end at the district tournament, as the Lions fell short 9-10 in a hard fought elimination match against Kentlake that closed months of preparation, camaraderie, and resilience. Despite the tragic loss, the team’s postseason finish reflected a season of determination.
While the defeat ended Bellarmine’s playoff hopes, the season itself included numerous accomplishments that highlighted the growth of the team. The team finished the season in 2nd place in the 3A Pierce County District while compiling a 7-3 district record and a 10-9 overall regular season mark. For the first time in years our team held a winning streak, and the opening of the season largely consisted of mercy-rule domination from Bellarmine with several astounding victories, leading to a record that only begs to grow stronger next year.
From the opening inning, the game carried the intensity expected of competitive softball. On a rainy Friday morning, our Lions showed flashes of aggressive offense and strong defense that kept the match fiery until the very last inning. Every at-bat counted, with both teams fighting to extend their seasons and seek glory at the state level. Key plays in the field, including two home runs from freshmen Abby Bailey and Polly McElligott, kept the game within fingertip reach, but momentum gradually shifted as Kentlake capitalized on scoring opportunities late game.
Even as the pressure mounted and victory became uncertain, Bellarmine continued to compete inning by inning, vocal and supportive. The close-knit culture that defines our softball team has battled through adversity multiple times this season, and that same mentality saw the game through. Following multiple nail-biting full counts, Kentlake scored the final run to close the game and send Bellarmine to the losers bracket. To put it simply, I offer coach Willie London’s words: “THAT was a competitive game.”
For seniors, the loss marked the end of their high school softball careers and an emotional conclusion to years spent on the team. Many played central leadership roles both on and off the field, helping younger teammates prepare to carry the torch for the next season. Though the end to the season was not the one Bellarmine had hoped for, the team’s perseverance and commitment remained present to the very end.
